Vintage 1968 Gibson Southern Jumbo with what appears to be the original hard-case.
This vintage instrument is in excellent condition. The only signs of playing wear is some fret wear and pick scratches on the pickguard. This looks to have about one year of gentle playing wear. This guitar is stamped lightly with a “2” above the serial number which means Gibson “supposedly” detected a minor finish flaw. According to George Gruhn these are almost always undetectable and do not effect the value of the guitar. Since these guitars are identical to guitars not stamped, there are some vintage guitar experts than theorize Gibson did this to move old inventory at lower wholesale prices. A 1/4″ output jack was cleanly installed on the bottom bass side but the electronics were later removed. There are a few areas in the top where there is checking along the grain. I have illuminated the inside of the guitar and inspected it carefully with a mirror. I can confirm that these areas of checking do not go through the wood. I did see a glued cleat at the bottom of the guitar under the center seam. I think this was added as a preventative measure. This fabulous 47-year old Southern Jumbo plays and sounds great with low action and saddle to spare!
